Shopify Developer Updates: Locale Files and Trusted-Vault Signal
In short: Two Shopify developer updates dated 30 October 2026: the 256 KB combined limit on locale files in checkout and customer-account UI extensions has been removed (the 30 KB per-file limit remains), and the 2027-01 Payments Apps API release candidate adds an optional trusted_vault_origin signal, which Shopify must enable per payment app, so apps do not reject a card payment solely for a missing CVV. Neither is an automatic conversion lift.
- The 256 KB combined locale limit for UI extensions is gone. The 30 KB per-file limit stays.
- Developers can restore languages that were cut to fit the old limit.
- trusted_vault_origin is a preview in the 2027-01 release candidate. It needs Shopify enablement. Existing fraud checks and 3-D Secure still apply.
- These are developer changes, not guaranteed conversion gains.
1. Bigger translation files for checkout and account extensions
Shopify's developer update says the previous 256 KB combined limit on locale files in UI extensions has been removed across API versions. The 30 KB limit per file stays. Teams that built localised checkout or customer-account extensions and had to drop languages or shorten text to fit can now restore them. This does not change which languages your storefront offers.
What store owners can do: if you sell in several languages and an app or custom extension dropped a language, ask your developer whether it can now be restored.
2. Trusted-vault signal for payment apps (preview)
The 2027-01 Payments Apps API release candidate adds an optional trusted_vault_origin true or false value to card-payment and verification requests. When Shopify enables it for a payment app and the value is true, the app should not reject a transaction only because the CVV is missing. Existing fraud checks and 3-D Secure still apply.
It is a preview that needs Shopify enablement, not a general change to checkout. Payment partners can test it to cut unnecessary declines.
Should you act?
- Most merchants need do nothing. These are developer-facing.
- If you run a multilingual store, check your checkout languages.
- If payment declines are high, ask your payment provider whether they plan to use the signal, and track decline reasons.
