Shopify GTIN Suggestions: Audit Barcodes for Google Shopping
In short: Shopify's 29 October 2026 changelog says its admin now checks GTIN-like barcodes against the GS1 registry, suggests verified GTIN types for saved custom codes and lets merchants accept suggestions in bulk. Shopify does not automatically change existing barcodes, and a validated GTIN does not guarantee better Shopping performance. It is a practical prompt to audit product identifiers before feed errors appear.
- Shopify can check barcodes against the GS1 registry and suggest verified GTIN types.
- Existing barcodes are not changed automatically. Suggestions need review.
- Shopping channels use identifiers to match products, so bad identifiers can cause avoidable feed issues.
- A valid GTIN does not guarantee better ad performance.
What changed
On 29 October 2026 Shopify said its admin can now check a barcode that looks like a GTIN against the GS1 registry, suggest the verified GTIN type for existing custom codes, and let you accept eligible suggestions in bulk.
Why ad teams should care
Google Shopping and other commerce channels use product identifiers to understand and match what you sell. Wrong or missing identifiers can create feed-quality problems even when your campaigns and bidding are fine. Fixing product data is often cheaper than raising budget. What it does not do
- It does not silently rewrite your saved barcodes. You review the suggestions.
- It does not guarantee more impressions or better ROAS.
- Products without a real GTIN, such as custom or handmade items, may legitimately have none.
A 30-minute audit
- Export products and list your top 50 by revenue or ad spend.
- Check each barcode against the vendor and product details before accepting a suggestion.
- Accept verified suggestions in bulk, and keep a copy of the old values.
- Wait for your feed to sync, then check Merchant Center diagnostics for identifier warnings.
- Repeat monthly for new products.
