AI Shopping Agents and Your Store: How to Get Ready
In short: In October 2026 Shopify moved its AI-agent Knowledge base into store admin, opened Shop Pay shopping to AI agents, and expanded its Catalog API beta. Walmart announced agent profiles and a gateway, and Google launched Universal Cart in the US. For brands, the common thread is accurate, structured product facts, clear policies and a smooth checkout.
- Shopify's Knowledge base now lives at Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base. Drafted facts stay unpublished until you approve them.
- The old standalone Knowledge Base app retires after 15 January 2027. Stores with over 1,000 facts must manually select what to keep.
- Shopify's Catalog API beta can include external brands in US product search, and external items check out on the brand's own site.
- None of this guarantees sales. It raises the importance of correct prices, stock, shipping and returns information.
What was announced
Several platforms moved the same way in October 2026. Shoppers will increasingly ask an AI assistant to find and, in some cases, buy products for them.
- Shopify Knowledge base (26 October). Merchants can review, edit and publish the facts AI shopping agents receive about their store at Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base. Shopify drafts facts from storefront pages and shows the source. New drafts stay unpublished until the merchant approves them.
- Shop Pay for agents (reported 13 October). Shopify is opening its shopping flow to AI agents without a bespoke partnership for each one. Shoppers connect an agent to their Shop account and approve purchases.
- Catalog API beta (27 October). Developers can request Shopify products, external products or both. External products link to the brand's own site, cannot use Shopify's native checkout and currently appear only for US shoppers.
- Walmart (21 October). Agent Profiles, planned for next month, will let shoppers authorise agents, set spending limits and see what was bought. An Agent Gateway begins as a beta for companies and developers.
- Google Universal Cart (15 October). In the US, shoppers can save items from different retailers across Search and Gemini, get price alerts and finish through Google Pay or merchant sites.
Many of these are US-first or beta. Indian merchants should not assume local availability, but the direction is clear.
What an AI agent needs from your store
An agent can only recommend what it can understand. It needs facts that are correct, current and easy to read:
- Exact product names, variants, sizes, materials and prices
- Stock status and delivery promises by location
- Returns, exchanges, warranty and gifting policies
- Support contacts and order-help steps
A readiness checklist
- Review your Knowledge base if you have access. Check drafted facts against your policies and publish only what is correct.
- Audit shipping and returns pages. Write them in plain sentences, not images or PDFs.
- Clean your product data. Fill the attributes shoppers ask about (size, material, compatibility, colour, care).
- Add structured data for products, prices, availability and reviews, and keep your Google Merchant Center feed in sync. See our Merchant Center guide.
- Keep stock accurate. Selling something that is out of stock is worse when an agent made the promise.
- Test your checkout as a stranger on mobile, including guest checkout and payment options.
- Plan for attribution. Agent-led visits may arrive without clear referral data, so track conversions and ask "how did you find us?" at checkout.
- Review app security. Apps that sync your catalogue need to stay healthy. See the Shopify token deadline checklist.
What this is not
None of these announcements promises higher rankings, conversions or revenue. Shopify itself describes the Knowledge base as a way to reduce misinformation, not to rank better. The sensible response is to get the basics right, because the same work helps normal search, ads and shoppers.
