Shopify WhatsApp Cart Recovery in India: Consent Checklist
In short: Shopify's Fall '26 Edition (28 October 2026) adds WhatsApp marketing consent collection at checkout and automated WhatsApp campaigns for product-browse, cart and checkout abandonment. Messages are subject to Meta template approval and messaging charges, and Shopify says WhatsApp marketing is available in most regions including India. Only message shoppers who gave explicit consent, and respect sending limits.
- New triggers: product-browse, cart and checkout abandonment, sent to opted-in shoppers.
- Consent is collected at checkout. Without explicit consent, do not send marketing messages.
- Meta template approval and messaging charges apply.
- Start with one flow, measure recovered orders and opt-outs, then expand.
What Shopify added
In its Fall '26 Edition on 28 October 2026, Shopify Messaging gained WhatsApp marketing consent collection at checkout and automated WhatsApp campaigns for three abandonment moments: product browsing, cart and checkout. Shopify says WhatsApp marketing is available in most regions, including India.
Why this suits Indian stores
Many Indian shoppers respond faster on WhatsApp than on email. A short, timely message with the exact product or cart can recover a sale that would otherwise be lost. The risk is the opposite: unwanted messages lead to blocks, reports and a damaged WhatsApp quality rating.
Set-up checklist
- Collect explicit consent. Use the checkout consent option and make the wording clear: the shopper agrees to receive marketing messages on WhatsApp. Do not pre-tick the box.
- Keep proof of consent. Store when and how each customer opted in.
- Use approved templates. Marketing messages need Meta template approval. Keep wording short and factual, and avoid misleading urgency.
- Start with cart or checkout abandonment. These have the strongest intent. Add browse abandonment later.
- Set a delay and a limit. For example, one message after a few hours and at most one follow-up. Do not message the same person repeatedly.
- Make opting out easy. Honour stop requests straight away.
- Budget for charges. Messaging has costs. Compare cost per recovered order with your average order margin.
- Check order and consent data. Make sure customers who already bought are excluded.
How to measure it
- Recovered orders and revenue from the flow.
- Message cost per recovered order.
- Opt-out and block rate. A rising rate means your frequency or wording is wrong.
- Compare against a holdout group where you can, because some of these customers would have bought anyway.
Combine this with accurate product data and tracking so your ads and messages tell the same story. See our Fall '26 Edition guide, our Shopify development service, or talk to us about your store.
