Shopify Global Catalog REST API Shuts Down: Migrate to MCP

By Ashit Malik, Socioshoot · Published · Updated · 4 min read

In short: Shopify says its deprecated Global Catalog REST API stops serving traffic on 2 November 2026. AI shopping assistants, product-discovery apps and catalog integrations that still use its search, product or lookup endpoints need to move to Global Catalog MCP, built on the Universal Commerce Protocol. This does not affect Shopify's separate Admin REST API.

Key takeaways
  • The Global Catalog REST API stops serving traffic on 2 November 2026. It was announced on 9 October.
  • The replacement is Global Catalog MCP, built on the Universal Commerce Protocol.
  • Map search to search_catalog, product retrieval to get_product and batch lookups to lookup_catalog.
  • The Shopify Admin REST API is a different API and is not shut down by this.

What is happening

Shopify's deprecated Global Catalog REST API stops serving traffic on 2 November 2026. Shopify announced this on 9 October, so today is the effective date and not a new feature.

The replacement is Global Catalog MCP, built on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).

Who is affected

Apps and AI agents that use the old global catalog endpoints to search products, retrieve variants or look up items across merchants. If you only use your own store's Admin API, this does not apply to you.

Why growth teams should care

Product discovery increasingly happens inside AI assistants and conversational shopping tools. If the catalog connection fails, a shopper may never see the right product, however much you spent to reach them.

Checklist for teams running these integrations

  1. Check whether any live workflow still calls discover.shopifyapps.com/global endpoints.
  2. Map search to search_catalog, product retrieval to get_product and batch lookups to lookup_catalog.
  3. Test product availability, variants and saved catalogs end to end before relying on the new flow.

What it is not

This is not a shutdown of Shopify's Admin REST API, which is a separate API. Related reading: how to get your store ready for AI shopping agents.
