Is AI Search Traffic Worth It? What a 100-Site GA4 Study Found
In short: A Marie Haynes analysis of 12 months of GA4 data across 100 sites found ChatGPT referrals equal to 0.62% of Google organic session volume, with a higher reported conversion rate (13.8% vs 3.02% on 55 sites). Google organic still produced about 27 times more conversions. AI search is worth preparing for, but it is not yet a replacement for Google traffic.
- Sample: 100 GA4 properties, 145 million+ sessions, 12 months. ChatGPT referrals were 0.62% of Google organic sessions.
- On the 55 sites tracking conversions, ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8% against 3.02% for Google organic.
- Google organic still generated about 27 times as many conversions as all LLM referrals combined.
- The study has limits (date range, industry mix and conversion definitions were not fully detailed), so treat it as directional.
What the study found
On 21 October 2026 Marie Haynes published an analysis of 12 months of GA4 data across 100 websites and more than 145 million sessions. In that sample:
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT referral sessions vs Google organic sessions | 0.62% |
| Conversion rate, 55 sites tracking conversions | 13.8% ChatGPT vs 3.02% Google organic |
| Total conversions | Google organic about 27 times all LLM referrals combined |
The message is balanced. Visitors from AI assistants often arrive further along in their decision. But the volume is still small next to Google search.
The limits of the data
- The exact date range, industry mix and conversion definitions were not specified consistently.
- Referral data can miss AI influence that shows up later as Direct or branded search.
- A bug in October 2026 stripped UTM tags from ChatGPT links for about a week, as we explain in our GA4 UTM bug article.
So treat 0.62% and 13.8% as directional evidence, not universal benchmarks.
What the platforms are doing
- Google announced on 15 October 2026 that AI Mode and AI Overviews will show clearer inline links, dedicated official-site sections, news carousels and clickable creator profiles. That creates more paths from AI answers to your pages, though Google has not promised higher traffic.
- Bing launched a Topics Portfolio beta in Bing Webmaster Tools on 13 October 2026. It groups the queries AI assistants use into themes, estimates topic size and competing sites, and highlights questions where others are cited and you are not. Estimates are directional, and sites without enough citation data may not see it.
What to do on your own website
- Answer real questions clearly. Put a short, direct answer at the top of each page, then the detail. AI systems and search engines both prefer pages that answer a question well.
- Make facts easy to read. Prices, services, locations, policies and contact steps should be written as plain text, not locked inside images.
- Use structured data. Organisation, Product, Service, FAQ and Article markup help machines understand a page.
- Keep pages fast and crawlable. Clean HTML, a sitemap and a robots.txt that does not block the crawlers you want.
- Build credibility. Named authors, real case studies, sources and dates make pages easier to trust and cite.
- Measure it. Create an AI channel group in GA4, track leads from those visits and add a "How did you hear about us?" question to your forms.
This is how we build our own site, and it is part of every website we develop.
So, is it worth it?
Yes, as part of good SEO, because the same work helps Google, Bing and AI assistants. No, as a reason to cut Google or paid investment today. Keep your budget where your measured leads and sales come from, and test AI visibility with a small, tracked effort.
