Is Meta AI Editing Your Live Ads? How to Check and Turn It Off
In short: Adweek has documented advertisers finding AI-added illustrations, sitelinks, translations and carousel variations in live Meta ads. It is a reported issue, not proof every account is affected. Check your live ad previews, review each creative enhancement setting individually and keep a record of the creative you approved.
- Reported advertiser cases include an AI illustration, added sitelinks, translated text and AI-built carousels in live ads.
- Some agencies pulled ads to remove the changes. This is not a universal rollout claim, so audit before you assume.
- Meta delayed its updated advertising terms from 30 October to 20 November 2026. A delay is not a cancellation.
- Regulated brands (healthcare, finance, education) should check live ads against their approved claims.
What advertisers are reporting
New reporting from Adweek on 22 and 23 October 2026 describes advertisers finding that the ad people saw was not the ad they approved. Examples include an AI-generated illustration added after an account update, extra sitelinks, translated copy and AI-built carousel variations. Some agencies said they pulled ads to correct the changes.
These are advertiser-reported cases. They do not show that every Meta account is affected. They do show that approval before launch is no longer enough for brands that need to control what the ad says.
Why this matters for your brand
- Claims. A rewritten headline can change a promise, a price or a compliance line.
- Brand look. An AI illustration can clash with your brand design or sit next to a product it should not.
- Language. Auto-translation can alter meaning, especially for Hindi and regional-language copy.
- Measurement. If creative changes without notice, test results become harder to read.
How to audit your live ads in 10 minutes
- Open the live ad preview, not the file you uploaded. Check it on Feed, Stories and Reels.
- Compare it with your approved creative. Look at text, images, links and any extra cards.
- Review the creative enhancement settings for each ad. Expand the Advantage+ creative options and look at each enhancement on its own instead of a single master toggle. Names and menus change, so check what your account shows.
- Turn off anything you did not intend to use. Leave on only what you have tested and are happy with.
- Save a record. Keep a dated copy of the approved creative so you can show what changed if something goes wrong.
- Repeat weekly for regulated or high-stakes accounts.
The 20 November terms delay
On 23 October 2026 Meta confirmed that its updated Commercial Terms and Self-Serve Ad Terms will take effect on 20 November 2026 instead of 30 October. The delay follows complaints by publisher and advertiser groups to regulators in the EU and UK about possible use of website content for AI. Meta disputes their interpretation and says it will clarify how its crawlers work and how site owners can express preferences through robots.txt.
Before 20 November:
- Read the updated terms for your own region instead of relying on summaries or screenshots.
- Ask whoever manages your website to review crawler preferences in robots.txt.
- Decide, in writing, which AI creative features your brand allows and who approves them.
A postponed deadline is not a withdrawn policy. Treat the extra weeks as review time.
How we handle it
On client accounts we switch enhancements on only when they have been tested, check live previews after every launch and keep the approved creative on file. If you want a second pair of eyes on your account, our Meta Ads team will review it for free as part of the account audit.
