Google Ads Channel Prioritization and Budget Allocation Explained
In short: From 15 October 2026 Google Ads began rolling out channel prioritization and best-effort budget allocation to eligible Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen campaigns. You can mark channels as higher or lower priority and cap the share of daily budget sent to lower-priority inventory. Caps are not hard guarantees, so verify in your reports.
- Rollout started 15 October 2026 for eligible Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen campaigns.
- Budget allocation caps the share of average daily budget for lower-priority inventory. Demand Gen does not support budget allocation.
- A 0% Search Partners allocation in PMax means no spend, but Google also calls allocations best-effort, so check your placement reports.
- Search campaigns using Display Expansion move to channel prioritization in February 2027.
What the new controls do
Google announced on 14 October 2026 that two controls would begin rolling out from 15 October for eligible Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen campaigns:
- Channel prioritization. You choose which channels or inventory types are higher or lower priority.
- Budget allocation. You cap the percentage of your average daily budget that can go to lower-priority inventory.
Two limits matter. Demand Gen does not support budget allocation. And the caps are best-effort, not hard guarantees.
Why advertisers wanted this
Automated campaigns can spend across several networks. If a lead-gen or ecommerce account sees weak results from one slice of that inventory, the old choice was blunt: accept it or restructure. These controls give a middle path. You can tell Google where you would rather the money go without switching a network off entirely.
The 0% Search Partners case in PMax
On 16 October Google Ads liaison Ginny Marvin clarified that eligible Performance Max advertisers can mark Search Partners as Low priority and set its daily budget allocation to 0%. Google's help page says 0% means no spend, but it also describes allocations generally as best-effort. So do not assume a hard network exclusion. Verify the setting and look at your placement reports after a few days.
How to use it without breaking what works
- Find the weak slice first. Use channel and network reports to see where cost per qualified result is worst.
- Change one thing at a time and note the date, so you can read the result later.
- Start with Low priority, then lower the allocation. Do not jump straight to 0% on a campaign that is working.
- Judge on qualified leads or profit, not clicks. Cheap clicks from a low-priority channel may still convert, and the reverse can be true.
- Check after one to two conversion cycles before concluding anything. Bidding needs time to adjust.
What changes for Search campaigns in February 2027
Google's help documentation says Search campaigns that use Display Expansion had a 50% backend allocation of unused Search budget sent to Display. From February 2027 those campaigns move to channel prioritization and the old behaviour ends. To approximate the previous setup, Google recommends setting Display to Low priority with a 50% daily allocation. Results may not be identical.

A note for agencies that automate
Reports conflict on API support. A Google liaison said channel prioritization and budget allocation are supported by the Google Ads API at launch, while the official help page still said API support was coming soon. Check your own account before you automate changes.
